UK studio team PresentDayProduction has put the MUM-8 three-way active monitor into production. The project began when the company was planning a Dolby Atmos room and could not find a monitor below GBP10,000 per pair that met its requirements. More than 35 cabinet prototypes followed.

The final design uses a Purifi PTT8 eight-inch aluminium-cone woofer and a choice of silk or beryllium BlieSMa drivers for the mid and high bands. Hypex NCore modules provide the amplification, giving the system a deliberately premium parts list rather than a conventional project-studio specification.

Its most practical detail is the 60mm-deep 3U amplifier enclosure. It can remain attached to the rear of the monitor or be removed and installed in a standard 19-inch rack, which is useful for soffit mounting and overhead immersive channels. That arrangement also makes the electronics easier to reach without disturbing the cabinet.
