The University of the Andes in Bogotá has opened La Caja de Música, a new professional studio building completed after seven years of design and construction. Conceived for musical practice, recording, and film mixing, the building was designed by university graduates Carolina Jaimes, Juan López, and Alejandro Puentes after they won the architectural competition for the project.
WSDG helped evaluate the competition entries and then supplied structural acoustics, isolation, room acoustics, AV systems design, and Technical Interior Design for the full facility. A central element is the 1,399 sq ft, 130m² triple-height live room, planned both as a recording space and as a flexible venue for recitals, rehearsals, and teaching.
The live room uses room-within-a-room construction and can be adjusted with motorized acoustic banners and movable wall elements, shifting from a speech-focused acoustic to a more reverberant musical environment. The adjacent WSDG-designed control room supports Dolby Atmos and stereo workflows with ADAM Audio studio monitors, custom diffusers, and NC20-level isolation, while the upper level adds a Dolby Atmos film-mixing theatre with an ISO booth and educational cinema seating.
