The Audix D6X is a dynamic microphone framed against the original Audix D6, which arrived in the early 2000s. In Mix’s real-world review, it was used in the studio and on stage, with A/B comparisons against the D6 on kick drum, rack tom, floor tom and bass amp. The listed price is $299.
The D6X looks close to the D6 but adds an engraved X and a three-position switch on the body. The lower D6 curve has an approximately 5 dB boost around 40 Hz, a midrange scoop of nearly 17 dB around 700 to 800 Hz and a gentle high-frequency boost beginning around 4.5 kHz and extending toward 15 kHz. The middle position reduces the low-end boost and cuts the midrange by about 8 dB around 500 to 600 Hz, while the upper natural position removes the bass boost, reduces the midrange cut to about 5 dB, moves the HF peak to around 3 kHz and rolls off above 7 kHz.
Construction uses a precision-machined aluminum body, black anodized finish and steel mesh grille, with the D6X measuring 5.4 inches long compared with 4.6 inches for the original D6. Its cardioid capsule uses Audix VLM diaphragm technology, with transformerless output, 280-ohm impedance, a 25 Hz to 17 kHz frequency range, 144 dB maximum SPL and sensitivity of 0.842 mVrms/Pa at 75 Hz measured at 0.5 meter. It is manufactured in the U.S. and ships with a soft zippered pouch and DCLIP mic stand clip.
