First Baptist Church in Carthage, Texas updated its sanctuary sound system as its worship style and music program had outgrown the original PA. The previous system had been largely unchanged since the building was constructed in 2003, with uneven coverage, aging loudspeakers and amplifiers, and limited intelligibility driving the replacement.
RP AVL, led by founder Ray Priszner, handled design and installation for a room that is wider than it is deep and has a stepped ceiling with frequency anomalies. The finished system uses two hangs of four Martin Audio TORUS T820 elements per side, two SX218 dual-18-inch subwoofers, two CDD6 loudspeakers for out fill, and two iKON IK41 amplifiers.
Martin Audio DISPLAY was used to import the room rendering, compare loudspeaker options and define the final configuration, with SMAART measurements reported within 0.2 dB of DISPLAY predictions at multiple positions. The TORUS constant-curvature approach supported front-row shading without front fills, while the CDD6 out fills extended coverage where needed, giving the church a more intelligible system for band, vocalists and choir without making the speakers more visually distracting in the sanctuary.
