Technik Museum Sinsheim has added a location-based sound design to the U17 submarine now displayed on land. Laboratonium Audioproduktionen developed the concept, using machinery, sonar, and crew sounds to change the character of the experience as visitors move through the vessel's compartments.
Eleven Genelec 8010A monitors and two larger 8030Cs are built into the route. The 8010A's small self-powered enclosure is well suited to spaces where both amplifier racks and cable paths are scarce, while the 8030Cs provide additional range where the programme demands it.
The installation is less about high playback level than precise proximity. By placing many compact sources close to the listener, the designers can create distinct acoustic zones while leaving the historic interior visually intact. It is a good example of a studio monitor becoming an unobtrusive exhibit loudspeaker.
