Church on the Queensway in Toronto, a worship facility seating 3,000 people, brought in full-service audiovisual provider Soundbox for a major audio upgrade. Its previous point-source system had to project more than 100 feet to cover the room and balcony, leading to uneven coverage and reduced intelligibility in some areas.
The new P.A. is based on a d&b audiotechnik SL-Series XSL line array system. It comprises four XSLi12 and twelve XSLi8 loudspeakers flown as left and right arrays, eight boxes per side, with four KSLi-SUB subwoofers in a center cluster. A Yi10P serves as a center fill beneath the subs, two additional Yi10P loudspeakers cover the left and right balcony sides, a pair of 10S-D point-source loudspeakers are used as balcony delays, and the system is powered by twelve 40D amplifiers with ArrayProcessing.
The selection process began after technical and media director René Barrow heard a d&b system at the 2022 PLASA trade show in England and then contacted Soundbox, a long-time partner of the church. Following a P.A. shootout, the church chose XSL, with the article citing lighter boxes, hangs that would not obstruct screen viewing, and remote monitoring through R1 software as practical factors for a large room used for worship, music, and spoken-word events.
