The Phil Collins Story is touring North America as a multimedia production built around Collins’ work with Genesis and his solo catalog. The article frames sound as a central part of the show’s storytelling, with Clair Global carrying production for the 50-city run.
The audio setup is based on a DiGiCo Quantum225 console used for both front-of-house and monitor work. On the monitor side, a DiGiCo DMI-KLANG card feeds musicians’ iPads running KLANG:app. Theodore “Ted” Woolsey handles FOH and created the show’s sound design, working with A2 Ethan Ginsburg-Margo. Audio, lighting and video operate as separate departments, with a Logic session from the music director sending click to the six-piece band and also cueing the lighting and video operators. The FOH position also includes Bricasti reverbs, a Yamaha SPX2000 and Waves plug-ins.
The KLANG system is used to let the musicians manage their own immersive monitor mixes without a dedicated monitor engineer. The setup runs from the DMI-KLANG card over a Cat 5 line to an access point serving the iPads, all sharing the same I/O. During rehearsals, each musician’s per-song mix levels were stored in snapshots, so monitor settings change automatically as the show advances. For a production that depends on tightly coordinated music, film, lighting and video, the workflow keeps personal control on stage while allowing Woolsey to stay focused on the live FOH mix.
